【Wristwatch introductory Lesson II: Note for Winding Mechanical Watches】

Mechanical watches do not rely on batteries to provide power like quartz watches, but generate kinetic energy by winding the mainspring. And how to wind your mechanical watch is also an important point you must know. However, many people have been wrongly winding their mechanical watches. Can you be sure that your winding method has not made the following mistakes?

 

 

*Wind-up = wind up the mainspring in the mechanical watch movement device to save kinetic energy*

Mechanical watches usually have manual winding (Manual Movement) or automatic winding (Automatic Movement) functions, and automatic winding is divided into one-way/two-way.

 

The difference between the two is the one-way or two-way reversing device. 

-One-way self-winding watch is the automatic disc is fixed to rotate in a certain direction to be wound

-Two-way automatic winding means that the automatic disc can be wound in either direction.

 

 

-The winding can be divided into manual winding and automatic winding by the movement of the oscillating weight while walking.

-Manual-winding:relies on the mechanical spring to tighten the clockwork by hand;

-Automatic-winding:as the name. Basically, all self-winding movements must have a balance wheel on the back of the watch. The swing of the wrist is used as the driving force to convert the kinetic energy into the spring force. The movement rotor (oscillating weight) will rotate to wind the barrel automatically without using a hand.

How to wind up the mainspring correctly

Many people think that just tightening the crown is enough. But an incorrect operation method inadvertently damages the internal structure of the watch. The structure of a mechanical watch is sophisticated and complex. In order to maintain and extend the life of the watch, we suggest that you refer to the following steps.

 

・Step 1: Take off the watch from your hand and place it on a stable surface

*Many people wind up the mainspring while wearing the watch directly for convenience, but this will add unnecessary pressure to the bottom of the watch and indirectly affect the operation of internal parts.

* *In order to reduce the impact on the inside of the watch, be sure to remove the watch from your hand before winding it.

 

 

・Step 2: Turn the crown directly clockwise 20 to 30 times

*Pay attention to the touch and sound when winding!

(If your watch only has a single upward chain, it will feel idling when turned in the wrong direction, which is different from the correct direction)

* *Manually wind to "80% full" is enough

* * *Overload protection device: self-winding mechanical watches are generally equipped with an overload protection device, if the chain is too much, it will return automatically

 

 

How to wind up the mainspring correctly (Screw-in crown)

・Refer to step one above

・Step 2: Rotate the crown counterclockwise 3 to 4 times until the crown pops out

・Step 3: Turn the crown in a clockwise direction (the direction depends on your watch) 20-30 times

・Step 4: Tighten the crown to restore it to the closed state

 

 

 

Principles of time adjustment for mechanical watches

-If the mechanical watch is left unused for a long period of time, the spring of the mechanical watch will relax until the watch stands still. At this time, if you want to wear it again, you must first rewind it fully, and then calibrate the time later.

 

-Generally, mechanical watches will show that the hour and minute hands slow down or become faster at the moment when the mainspring is at its weakest. Therefore, the mainspring must be fully wound first to prevent the hands from being driven by standard power after the time has been calibrated.

 

-Even if it is an automatic winding watch, it should be manually wound to eighth full before time calibration.

 

 

     

    Remember! Even if your watch has an automatic winding function, remember it depends on the swing of the wrist to wind the oscillating weight. Please wind the watch occasionally (at least once a month) to keep the oil and lubricant in the movement evenly distributed if you seldom wear your watch.

     

    In addition to improving the service life of the watch, it can also save a lot of maintenance costs. Sent back to the factory for cleaning and refueling regularly, otherwise the efficiency of the automatic winding will also be affected.

    機械錶不如石英錶依靠電池來提供動力,而是通過替發條上鍊而產生動能。而如何為你的機械腕錶上鍊亦是一個你必須知道的要點。然而很多人其實一直以來錯誤地為自己的機械腕錶上鍊,你能確定你的上鍊方法真的沒有犯過以下錯誤嗎?

     

     

    *上鍊=為機械腕錶機芯裝置中的發條上緊,儲蓄動能*

    機械腕錶通常具備手動上鍊(Manual Movement)自動上鍊(Automatic Movement)功能,自動上鍊中又分單向/雙向

     

    兩者的區別在於單向或者雙向換向裝置。 

    -單向自動上鍊腕錶是自動盤固定朝某個方向轉動才能上鍊

    -雙向自動上鍊則是自動盤不論轉向任一方向都能上鍊。

     

     

    -上鍊可分為手動上鍊 及 靠走動時擺陀的活動而自動上鍊。

    手動上鍊的自動機芯依靠人手擰緊發條的機械彈簧提供動能;

    自動上鏈機械機芯同樣使用彈簧發條系統。基本上所有的自動上鍊機芯錶背一定有一個擺輪。以人手活動、依靠手腕擺動為動力,將動能轉換為發條彈力。當活動時,機芯自動陀(擺陀)就會跟著手腕活動而旋轉、自由擺動來給發條盒上鏈。

    如何正確上鍊

    很多人以為就這樣扭緊錶冠就可以。但其實只是在一知半解的情況下,一直用錯誤方法替腕錶補充動力,而這樣不正確的操作方式,無意中損害腕錶內部結構。機械腕錶的結構精密而複雜,為了維持及延長腕錶的壽命,我們建議大家可參考以下步驟。

     

    ・步驟一:先把腕錶從手上脫下,放置在平穩的表面上

    *很多人為求方便會直接戴著手錶上鍊,但這會替腕錶底部增加不必要的壓力,間接影響到內部零件的運作。為了減低對腕錶內部的影響,請務必把腕錶從手上先取下再進行上鍊。

    ・步驟二:直接以順時針方向旋動錶冠20~30次

    ▸ 

    *上鍊時可留意觸感和聲音!

    (若你的腕錶只有單向上鍊,轉錯方向時會感到空轉,跟正確方向有所不同)

    * *切勿過度上鏈:手動上鍊至「八成滿」即可

    ▸ 

    * * *過載保護裝置:自動上鍊的機械腕錶普遍備有過載保護裝置,若上鏈過多會自行回調

    ▸ 

     

     

    如何正確上鍊(旋入式錶冠)

    ・請先參考以上步驟一

    ▸ 

    ・步驟二:先逆時針方向旋轉錶冠3~4次直到錶冠彈出

    ・步驟三:以順時針方向(方向取決於你的腕錶)旋動錶冠20~30次

    ・步驟四:扭緊錶冠,還原至緊閉狀態

     

     

    機械腕錶調校時間原則

    機械錶長時期的靜置不用,機械錶的發條就會放鬆至錶款靜止不動,這時候,若要重新佩戴,就務必先重新上滿發條,在這以後再校準時間。普遍機械錶在發條最鬆的時刻,會顯露出來時針、分針減慢或變快的情況,因此必須先上滿發條,免得校準時間後,沒有標準動力驅動指針。縱然是自動上鍊錶款,也應先用手動上鍊至八分滿,再進行時間校準。

     

    ▸   

     

    就算長時間不佩戴,也要記得偶爾為手錶上鍊(至少一個月1次),以保持機芯內機油和潤滑劑的分佈均勻,除了提高手錶的使用壽命,也能省下不少維修費用。當腕錶使用到一定年限,仍是需要送回廠清洗加油,不然自動上鍊的效率也將受到影響。
